MEDFORD — A Kansas man has been ordered held without bail, charged with stealing nearly $100,000 from an elderly woman
in Massachusetts through a foreign lottery scam.
Darrell Kinney was arraigned today on charges of felony larceny by scheme and larceny over $250.
Prosecutors allege that Kinney called an elderly woman in Arlington, told her she had won a lottery in Jamaica and said she
had to pay the taxes on the prize money in order to claim her winnings. The woman sent checks totaling $93,000 to an address
in Kansas.
Arlington police and Kansas authorities said they traced the phone number and a Kansas shipping address to Kinney.
Authorities are investigating whether there were other victims.
Kinney’s hometown in Kansas could not immediately be determined.
