Lottery scam hits San Jose...
Thursday, July 23, 2009 posted 11:28 AM EDT
SAN JOSE - San Jose Police are warning residents, especially Seniors, to be on the lookout for a lottery scam.
A police spokesman says thieves approach the victims, tell them they have a winning lottery ticket, but are unable to claim
the prize because they are not US citizens.
The thieves then attempt to trick the victims into handing over their valuables by claiming they need collateral to redeem
the ticket.
The scam goes a step further with the thieves supposedly calling the Lottery... a person on the other end then confirms the
winning ticket and the need for collateral.
Police & lottery officials want the public to know that you don't have to be a US citizen to claim a lottery prize, that
the Lottery doesn't confirm winning tickets over the phone, and that collateral is never required to claim a prize.
