Powerball Jackpot Reaches $109 Million; Two $1 Million Power Play Prizes Won
Thursday, May 07, 2009 posted 11:13 AM EDT
(Powerball) Even though the grand prize was not hit Wednesday evening, Powerball had some huge winners. Two tickets sold
in Louisiana (1) and Rhode Island (1) matched all 5 white ball numbers with the Power Play for an incredible $1 million cash
win! This is part of the new game feature that guarantees a 5X multiplier on all match 5 white ball winners that also have
the Power Play option pushing the prize to $1 million cash. Nine other lucky tickets sold in Arizona (1), Iowa (1), Louisiana
(1), New Hampshire (1), Rhode Island (2), Tennessee (2), and Wisconsin (1) each won $200,000 cash by matching all 5 white
ball numbers!
The jackpot for the Saturday, May 9th drawing will be $109 million with the cash option at $56.5 million.
The numbers drawn Wednesday evening were 7, 8, 12, 22, 31, and the Powerball was 18. The Power Play multiplier was 5.
A whopping 35 tickets matched 4 white numbers plus the Powerball and won $10,000. Thirteen additional tickets of that prize
level had the Power Play and had the prize multiplied by 5 for a $50,000 cash win! A total of 686,837 tickets across the
nation won more than $10.7 million in prizes playing America’s favorite game.
A total of 143,583 winning Powerball tickets multiplied their prize by 5 Wednesday. Players were able to do that by purchasing
the Power Play option for $1. With Power Play you multiply your Powerball winnings from 2-5 times, except for the jackpot.
At the beginning of each drawing an animated spinner presents each multiplier number.
Players should carefully check their tickets after every draw. Even if there are no jackpot winners there are always tens
of thousands of winners at other prize levels.
Players purchased $26,431,205 in Powerball and Power Play tickets between Sunday and Wednesday night.
The lotteries sold $2.56 billion in Powerball tickets in fiscal year 2008. That translates into over $743 million for worthwhile
state projects.
Powerball is now played in 30 states, the District of Columbia, and the U.S. Virgin Islands.
