Powerball Jackpot Climbs to $54 Million!
Sunday, July 20, 2008 posted 10:30 AM EDT
POWERBALL, Jul 20, 2008 (MARKET WIRE via COMTEX) -- The Powerball drawing was briefly delayed and officially held at 11:17
p.m. Eastern Saturday evening. Due to Powerball's strict security standards, the drawing was not held until all state sales
data sites were secured. The drawing was held under the supervision of the independent audit firm of LWBJ, L.L.P. and a local
law enforcement officer.
The numbers drawn Saturday night were 6, 28, 46, 53, 55 and the Powerball was 2. The Power Play multiplier was 3.
Even though the grand prize was not awarded Saturday evening, 1 lucky ticket in Maine matched all 5 white numbers with the
Power Play and won $600,000 cash! Two other winners matched all 5 white numbers for $200,000 in the states of Arizona (1)
and Pennsylvania (1). In addition, 424,409 tickets across the nation won a total of $19,377,153 in prizes.
Because no one correctly matched all six numbers in Saturday's drawing the jackpot will grow to an estimated $54 million!
The cash option for the Wednesday, July 23rd drawing will be an estimated $26.1 million.
Other prizes won Saturday evening included twenty-four tickets that matched 4 white numbers plus the Powerball and won $10,000.
Five additional tickets at this prize level were also wisely purchased with the Power Play option and multiplied winnings
3 times to $30,000 cash!
A total of 86,183 winning Powerball tickets multiplied their prizes by 3 Saturday. Players were able to do that by purchasing
the Power Play option for one dollar. With Power Play you multiply your Powerball winnings from 2 to 5 times, except for
the jackpot. At the beginning of each drawing a wheel is spun to select that night's multiplier.
Players purchased $19,377,153 in Powerball and Power Play tickets between Thursday and Saturday night.
The lotteries sold more than $2.56 billion in Powerball tickets in FY08. That translates into more than $743 million for
worthwhile state projects.
Powerball is now played in 29 states, the District of Columbia, and the U.S. Virgin Islands.
