RALEIGH -- North Carolina's lottery is just two months old, and already someone has claimed a $1 million prize in the Powerball
drawing.
The winning ticket was sold at a Rowan County convenience store, and the winner is Victor Poplin. He received his check at
a news conference in Raleigh on Thursday. Poplin matched five of the Powerball numbers in Wednesday’s drawing for a total
of $200,000. But he also selected the Power Play, which multiplies winnings by five.
Powerball, a numbers-picking game played in 28 states and the Virgin Islands, began in North Carolina last week.
Players matching all five numbers and the Powerball would have won or shared the $61 million jackpot. Instead, the prize
goes to an estimated $73 million for Saturday.
Tickets that matched five numbers in Wednesday's drawing win $200,000.
The $1 million prize went to one player in North Carolina and another in South Carolina who also selected an extra $1 game
called Power Play Match Five. Their winnings were multiplied by five.
