(03/31/06 -- RALEIGH) - State officials say North Carolina's new lottery is an instant winner - - and some lottery workers
are hitting the jackpot.
More than $10 million in tickets were sold on the first day. The state paid out more than $1 million in prizes in the first
10 hours alone.
Lottery workers also came out big winners. Because the games started before an April 5 deadline, 162 lottery workers were
awarded bonuses.
Lottery Director Tom Shaheen will get a $50,000 bonus on top of his $235,000 annual salary. His six top deputies will get
$16,000 each. Nine other directors will get an average of $11,333, and 107 workers will get an average bonus of $1,438.
